About us

The Tamworth Area Radio Model Aircraft Club (TARMAC) was formed in the 1960’s and strives to promote the growing model aircraft hobby. Almost anyone of any age can learn to fly model aircraft which need to be flown in a designated area, with the pilots needing insurance to ensure the protection of all involved. With our approved instructors, we look forward to assisting beginners into model aircraft flying. Whether your interest lay in internal combustion or electric propulsion, we are here to help!

At the moment, we are predominantly flying on a Sunday from 9.00am and you can usually see a good range of model aircraft from sport, scale, gliders, pattern, oldtimers, ducted fan and even helicopters! We are now flying through the week mostly on Wednesday, weather permitting.

Before buying any model aircraft, we encourage you to come out to the field and have a test flight with one of our instructors with the aid of a “buddy box” to see if you like it. You can ask all the questions you need so If you decide to continue on, an informed purchase can be made.

DO NOT attempt to fly any model aircraft with out first undertaking instruction as it is 99.9% guaranteed that you will crash your new aircraft.

We hold a meeting on the second Thursday of each month at “The Serivces Club” on Marius Street, Tamworth at 7.30pm and invite all who are interested to attend.

Where are we located?

After 30 odd years, and with the redevelopment of our old site, we have had to relocate to a new flying field.

On January 4th 2009, we had the first flights on our new flying field which is located near the grounds of the old horse racing track in Somerton which is approx 35km West of Tamworth on the Gunnedah Road.

Driving from Tamworth, head out on the Gunnedah Road / Oxley Highway. The Tamworth Regional Airport on your left and Oakburn park on your right. Continue on ahead for approx 30km. You will drive into the small town of Somerton. On your right is the Somerton Pub. On your left you will approach a fuel station / Roadhouse. Turn left just before the Roadhouse into Racecourse Road. Proceed down this road past “Brownies” farm on the left, and continue on to Somerton Tip Road. Turn left down Somerton Tip Road and approx 200 metres on the left is the field entry gate directly opposite the Somerton Cemetery. Follow the driveway around to the Club House and carpark.

We look forward to seeing you!
